i've seen them on here.. and at my LFS i know they get big but what makes them so expensive? i'm curious , there awesome looking fish so i want to know more!

1. They Live 50m below surface possibly bringing them back up too fast they might get the bends.
2. Good looking fish do sell for more
3. There a mouthbrooder
4. They take around 2-4years to reach maturity to breed in captivity
5. Conditions must be pretty good weekly w/c and a decent filtration system

So your probally paying for time that people have taken to care for them to breed them, females get raped if its just a male and female so a ratio of 4:1 is pretty good

I have 9 fronts hope in few years to breed them :)

Try to find a successful breeder which you could get a better deal from or try find a few breeders to stop inbreeding, imagine sleeping with a family member having children its just not right hahah

good luck finding some anyways oh try get more than less the fewer you get the more shy they will be and if you wanted put some other africans with them that will bring them out of there shell a bit cause they are real softies that need alot of attention

^pretty much that, a lot of work to get them, care for them and the time and effort people put into them. If you get wild caught or f1 you pay more, as they are a "higher or better quality".

If you are intrested in getting any make sure you have the tank space. Get them young and get a lot. When they get older you sell them off and depending on tank size you can keep 6+ of them usually 1-2 males and the rest females depending on how many you keep. You sell off the extras. If you get them all from one breeder you just take the male or males you decide to keep and you trade them off with a different breeder. Most breeders I talked to are more then willing to suggest another breeder to trade with so you dont interbreed.

I have about nine groups/colony's of Frontosa's. Burundi, Kigoma 7 bar, F1 Ikolas, FO Samazi, F1 Samazi, Fo/F1 Nangu (in 350g), Fo Zaire Tembwe, F1 Zaire Kitumba, F1 Zaire Kapampa. Have had more wild & F1's of Zaires.
I breed most above except Zaires that hardly ever breed but have had some.
Fo/Wild I think are a pain in the butt! They attend to be more skidish & a heck lot more aggressive!!! I have many killings & Jumpings. If you get FO's then a big tank of 125 or bigger minim.
My Fo Samazi pair are in a 75 gallon split up with egg crate so he will not kill her. Just had a spawn of these a few weeks ago using this method. He had killed the other breeding female. So I could not see devoting a large tank for two fish & these are not always easy to come by.
They do better in groups 5 or more. I once had a breeding colony of 18 in a 100 long. For breeding have a lot of pvc tubes of varried sizes so each has their own spot.
Males can mature in a couple years & Females longer. You could house them in a 48x24,60x18 size tanks. They are pretty hardy & not that hard to take care of. Same conditions as other rift lakes. They get along with most other fish but more inter aggression among themselves.
Burundis are the least expensive & most common. I have a few hundred young on hand now & sell them in my shop for $10 for 1-2"
My Kigoma & the others go for around $15-$20 depending on the size?
Zaires $30-$50 ea. at a inch.

Great fish imo.

I have a 125 gal and they say do not go smaller. Here are mine. I got them when they were very small and they are around 6-7 inches. I keep a blue dolphin and 2 Leleupi with them from the very start. This tank has been up for over 2.5 years. I am training them to eat out of my hand and yesterday they did!

Scared the crap out of me!

These are not the best quality; they are called Umbari, something like that. There were a gift of 10 for $100 and the breeder tossed in two extra, as they usually do.

what size tank are we talking about?

They are best kept in colonys and colonys should be kept in a tank of 125gal at minimum. I would say a decent size colony would be 5+

Yes. Keep them in colonies and weed out submales as you grow them out. Started with 10 kigomas and finally got to 2m/4f after 4 years. Now producing fry. Keep them with other peacefull fish and give them plenty of room/caves. XL clay pots with holes in the sides are best IME.
