Curious about hybrids

i have seen gorgeous hybrids and butt ugly hybrids. but one that hits me is jack dempsey and a convict its one that isnt ugly nor completley amazing but normal looking. but i have a female convict and a male jack and my female keeps flaring her gills at the jack and he kindov ignores it. so id like to get some help. just leave a reply with your thoughts

when they start to breed they will not flare at eachother but flare at other fish in the tank.

If the male is smaller than the female the likely won't pair. Some like territorial aggression.

the male jack is larger by like an inch or two but the female convict swims with him and has dug out a cave but she will charge and they will have like a stand off and then she swims away.
