curious about trout breeding. new pond build

I'm goin to build a pond in my pack yard in Canada. 5' wide 6 to 8' long and around 4 feet at its deepest. a 15 foot long stream will end in a waterfall about 16 inches above the surface. thinking about having brook trout. would i have to divert some water from the stream to flow in smoothly at surface level for breeding grounds?
 
Brook trout need a stream environment to spawn. I doubt they can jump the waterfall and get into the stream so you will have to divert the stream.
