I have had this cutie since a wee teenie baby in fact I didn't even know for sure what kind of fish I bought!!! I bought "him" in a tank at the LFS which was labeled as "Assorted Cichlids"
He such a ham when I have the camera but the bummer is my camera takes crap pics!!!
Just curious if I have a male or female JD Thanks in advance!

Male.

Edit... The spangling as I like to put it(circles around the gill and mouth area) will be blotched together on females where as yours has totally uninterupted spangles.

Hmmm....we have always called him "Jack" but lately my gut is that he is really a "Jackie" because his personality is so docile. He literally like a big rainbow trout just lazily swimming in the tank. So I am guessing males are more laid back than the females? or not necessarily?

From my experience with my electric blue jack dempsey and my female regular jack dempsey the female was the boss of the tank but she was breeding with him so I don't know if that played a factor.

Ok, well Jack has picked a girlfriend who happens not to be a JD although we aren't sure what mix of parrot fish....possibly a rose queen, midas cichid or ????
Every couple of weeks they start doing their "love swim" and then before long the orange one starts moving rocks and digging a hole chasing anyone who comes near it. We now know when this "game" is soon to happen as her whole body turns this brilliant neon orange. The pic I posted is her orange mask bandit "single" look. As far as I know neither has ever spawned any eggs!

Just depends on his tankmates. Fish is definitely a male, and if there's nothing in the tank to intimidate or stress him out, he has no reason to act otherwise..

cool what tank size do u have them in?

Snapped 2 more pics of the "couple".
Any takes on the parrot fish genetics?
