I think my elongatus has curled gill covers. What caused this and is there anything I can do to fix it?

My elongatus is currently 4 inches and housed in a 55 gal. growout tank.

Please advise.

Thank you.

gill curl isn't permanent as long as it hasn't reached the operculum (the hard part of the gill cover), so if its just curled a bit along the outer edge, it should go away on its own granted its in a large enough tank and you keep your water pristine.

increasing the current would help as long as you still provide dead areas where it can chill. did it have gill curl when you got it or did it start to happen after?

I haven't seen much improvement on the curled gill cover on my elongatus. He eats well and is very active especially when the lights go out. Is there anything I can do to improve it like adding medication or salt?

Please advise.

Thanks guys!

There once was a guy with an almost 3 foot asian arow.. he had gill curl and his solution was as follows..

I am in now way saying to do this with your elong but this is what he had told me..

He takes the fish and puts them in a small amount of water with a couple of power heads.. then he uses his hand : / and slowly follows the arow around the tank untill he gets tired and worn out.. leaving the arow under water he then he uses his finger and gently massages both of the gill covers in small circular motions..

What this does is slightly damages the gill covers and forces them to reheal themselves.. which will slowly take the curl out of the gill covers..

I have never tried this method, because i like my fingers.. and well nothing has ever been wrong with my fish.. but i hope this helps you out..

Thanks for that cepon3. But are there other solutions/ cures out there which won't stress the fish or require me to handle the fish.

Really need your help guys.

Thank you!

i wish i had more solutions.. i reccomend that you take a look over at the arowana section.. they are much more prone to gill curl then piranha.. maybe somebody that has encountered the problem first hand will be able to offer you a different solution.. good luck
