I started a tank about a month ago with 4 baby RBP's. They've grown about an inch so far and overall look great. I have them in a 55 (for now) with one filter rated for 55-70gal. I would like to add another smaller filter (maybe something like a 30gal filter) to the other side of the tank, but I've always been under the impression that they like calm water (they tend to avoid the part of the tank where the filter drains out, and at their small size of 1-2" it seems to toss them around.) I see some people around the forums telling other to add some current, though. Should I? And would adding a second filter now be best or could I get away with waiting until they get a little bigger?

You could easily use another filter, piranhas are messy. I think a canister filter would be your best bet, it will be much quieter while making water movement aswell. Piranhas shoal better when there is a current so any type of water movement is good imo

Current not only gives the fish exercise which in turn increases their metabolic rate but it also helps in breaking up aggression among the shoal!

I have 2x ac110 (500gphx2)+ 1200gph powerhead on my 90gal with only 1 2.75" juvy rhom, he loves swimming everywhere and in turn he burns more calories thus eats more and imo this has helped his growth tremendously and he is a bulky/strong looking fish!

Try adding a ph, that will just push the water like a fan and if the fish want to swim in the current they can. I use the korillia evo 1400 but for your tank id go with the 1050model, great product and price too, and it will more efficiently blow debris into your filter intakes.

Also a heater controller with prevent deaths attributed to heater problems, always a good investment and you can adjust it to a 1/10th of your desired temp, love mine and good price too:http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+4416+21333&pcatid=21333
