New member here but have been lurking for a long time, so hello all. I am in the process of polishing a 300 gallon acrylic, as well as looking for another because the current is only 1/2".
I will be building my own sump (100 gal). Is anyone using the new loop system from current? I found thy have a bundle with 2- 72" lights, 2 -2100gph powerheads, and the eflux 3170 this also includes the loop system and controller. Will the 2- 72's be enough light? It's going to be a cichlid setup so not looking to grow corals. Just looking for opinions, go a totally different route with return pump and lighting? Anyone using his setup? Etc.

Why would you want fully programmed coral lights for a cichlid tank? I'm using 2 LED flood lights and a timer for my 180, about $60 on Amazon. Throw in 2 powerheads at $80 each and a reeflo return pump ($300) and you are less than half the price of that set up.

I'm sure it's a fine set up and would work great. But I don't see the extra $700+ to add any functional value.

Yea, in general for non planted freshwater aquariums the goal is as little light as necessary to enjoy the fish, unless you enjoy scraping algae :)

I currently run led reef lights on all of my setups, plus I also want a dc pump for their quiet operation, I found a hell of a deal on the bundle as well you have 540 in the setup you stated and the price I got for the bundle was @ 860. SO I was thinking that what not go with it and then have the option of got salt

I don't have major algae issues and any of my current setups, its rare that I even have to clean the glass/acrylic. I will say that I do have fairly large plecos in all of them. I have a 90 setup I even worry about the pleco not getting enough food.

My light was 10.00
My little giant pump 45.00
My wave maker, 8.00
My replacement leds, to fix 300.00 reef light.
$6.00 and about 2 hours.

The reef light will be very programmable, with UV Spectrum that really brings out the colors.
I had to keep mine on half power, most of the day, as the algea was growing too fast, when my fish were smaller.

i have that exact Current Loop system on my 240gal tang tank. FYI the algae for me is a non-issue since i run a GFO reactor and a UV sterilizer. phosphates are too low for the algae to grow quickly.

Likes:

  1. The quality of the lighting is great for FW or SW without coral. if you run coral, you'll probably want different lights.
  2. I like the programmability of the lighting; it's easy and works well.
  3. I also like the fact that you can add a % weather program to the lighting schedule. it's a way of reducing total daily lighting (to reduce algae) while still keeping the lights on long enough to enjoy the fish.
  4. This return pump is my first DC pump. I really like it; it's quiet and the control is great. I doubt if it puts out nearly as much water as they say, but it's more than adequate for my setup.
  5. The wave pumps are great. They synchronize. I use them to send a surge every 90sec to keep my sand clean. I literally NEVER vacuum the tank. Spotless.
  6. Remote is cool.
  7. Future bluetooth capability will be great.
  8. Setup was straightforward, although a few screws were missing.
Dislikes:
  1. The feed function is a KILLER for me. the idea is great, but for some reason it slows my pump in such a way that i get a siphon from my supply tubes AND my check valve doesn't close. The feed button, for me, literally floods my house. The other issue: the feed function is supposed to reset after 15min. doesn't happen for me.
  2. Cables for the lighting & wave pumps weren't long enough for my tank.
  3. The light brackets included are not big enough for wide (fore to aft) tanks. probably good for 18" tanks, but mine is 24". they make a bigger bracket, but you can't buy just the extensions. i went to home depot & cobbled something together.
all in all, it's a good integrated system. it could be SO much better if they wanted it to be, but for the price it's a good buy. i would do it again. let me know if you want pics or anything.
