Hi all

recently i just changed to a overhead filter for my rtg. however the powerhead seems to deliver quite a strong punch of current. my rtg is around 12inches big.

when it swims on the line of "firing" from the powerhead he gets pushed away but it's still manageable. the trickling of water back into the tank seems to create another direction of current too but i guess that could be solved by raising the water height slightly.

so my question... is it ok for my arowana? will the strong current hurt him in long run? And how can i block the powerhead? it has 2 outflow, one to a piping up to the overhead filter and another into the tank.

i'm using dolphin p1008. i googled and read some saying there's another head that i can change. but that's all i get in the box of new filter i bought. the other head is plainly just a 1 outflow head which if i use it, have no outflow to the piping over into the filter on top.

any advise?

What's the size of tank and what is your GPH of the powerhead? My RTG is about 20" and is in a 520 gallon tank with two 3200 gph powerheads and a hammerhead pump on the the sump for return. Loves the current and eats like a pig.

I've got 2 big powerheads and the return from my FX5 all at the same end and my saratoga loves it. He is bigger then your RTG at about 17" but when I first set it up he would struggle but has since really beefed up and just seems to glide through it now.

i thought so too at the start but i noticed skins scraped off on the 2nd day

so i changed to a smaller flowrate pump without 2nd outflow head.

now the surface is only broke by the water trickling down from the filter.. no more powerhead. he settled down and on the way to recovery from the sikin scrape.

My 55 gallon for my jar has a strong strong water current... She loves it!!! Shes growing great and looks happy as she often swims against the current for endless hours. I have a aquaclear 70 fluval 204 fluval 405 powerhead and a monster air pump powering some sponge filters. What I find best is that keeping the aro in a small tank when there small with a current helps them overall leading to a healthier fish in the long run.

And as for the skin scraps maybe it jumped and hit the lid? Mine does that and has some scales missing from time to time -__- mines a little skittish bastard!

My Arowana deals with strong current - he is 28" though.
My other gets pushed by my 12,000 powerhead - but he can escape the current up the other end of the tank.

Regardless though i don't think it harms them unless it's overly powerful - it's all a question of common sense.

If you can't decide then perhaps posting a video of him swimming around the tank so we can see how he moves and how the current moves him.

great answer! as long as the water isnt a typhon your aro can only benefit form the current!

hmm i don't think it's cause of jumping as i only fill the tank almost half full + i was around the whole day before i noticed the scrapes. pretty sure the scrapes came from the current.

anyway case closed and tanks alot guys. i changed to a smaller flowrate motor without 2nd outflow head. he's all back to his usual self, active and eating like a piggy

thanks alot everyone! :)
