Looking for a service that will make a custom built plastic cover for an aquarium. I'd provide the specs and the company would make it. It is nothing special (I think), only a large sheet of plastic with some holes for filtration tubes to enter/exit. Extra features would be nice of course. I've found custom metal lids but nothing based on plastic. I have a salt water aquarium and my last metal lid rusted within months, so metal won't work.

Well, i tried plastic lids a few years ago, custom from a plastics place. they did not work. After a couple months the plastic begins to warp and soon they dont even fit on the tank anymore. The lights will also begin to yellow the plastic. Your talking salt too, so i dont know what other effects that would have on it. Just stick to glass, it really is the best option

I don't use a light on the tank directly, and I am pretty fine with overshooting the size of the lid. Not too worried about aesthetics at all. I thought plastic lids would have problems, but my metal lid began to visibly rust within 6 months, and within a year large swaths of rush were visible. So even if a plastic lid doesn't too long, it might be a cheaper in the long run to continually replace every year or so. How long did yours last before warping set in?

Mine started warping real quick, just a couple months. I was really dissappointed i thought i found the next big thing, but i guess glass is used for a reason. My plastic was pretty thin, i have no idea if thicker plastic would hold up better i never tried it. Of course thicker plastic is more expensive. If you want to try it i just started calling plastic making/cutting places and it was easy to find one that would do whatever i wanted

Why not just use glass? Glass lids are cheap (not as cheap as egg crate) and work great.

How about gluing egg crate to acrylic cover? Would that give it more strength so it would not warp?
