Picked up an unused 404 at a thriftstore lfs price tag still on it for $20. No loving the stock set up. I just finished the plumbing on a fx5 I got for free, so I've got some ideas. I really would appreciate suggestions or personal experiences.

Well....not much you can do to trick out the intake...it is what it is. I would invest in good quality tubing, appropriately sized of course, and decide if you want a spray bar or a movable nozzle...there are plumbing kits sold for Eheim canisters but they have worked very well with other filters I have used....I will look and link it.

Keep it simple....just my opininion.
You know an undergravel will mean a complete teardown to install...a powerhead placed low will stir up the debris enough to get it in the filter...and you can play around with placement.
UGF are cool, don't get me wrong, but the upflow you are envisioning just isn't going to be there.

This 8s why I post here. Text book example. Thanks for the insight, I'll do the same pvc and set it up lower in the tank. I think maybe, with my circulation fan set up low enough I can avoid the tear down.
