I do custom woodworking and woodturning and have been designing and drawing up stands and hoods. Stuff a little different than you see out there as well as some more normal stuff. I have specs with add on's for LED lighting on the stand to add glow when the lights are out... I was wondering has/or does anyone do this currently? is it worth it? Is there a good market for this?

I'm sure there's a market for it but it really depends on how big the market is. If I had extra money I'd buy a stand with led's in it. I think it'd add a nice touch and some light when looking around for something.

Custom stand generally cost more money than people Are willing to pay. Materials will generally run about the cost of what a pet store stand will cost. That doesn't even factor in the labor it takes which is generally billed at $80+ and definitely take a lot longer than a couple hours.

I have access to a family wood yard so material cost (as far as wood) is next to nothing. I have a couple lfs that said they would put out flyers or display stands.

It's a niche market because you will be competing against mass produced particle board i.e (sawdust and glue) structures. Mass production vs custom craftsmanship. The kind of people that understand value vs cost are who your appealing too and not your typical "Petco" customer who may not be in it for the long haul. I build custom and commercial tanks over 500g for people and ran into the same situation when I first started my shop. You have to market to a different type of customer and remain cognizant of the price in relation to your competition. I use hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut or cherry to trim the tanks I build, my Father is a cabinet maker and custom furniture maker and we have very little over head. The stands are powder coated welded square steel faced with hardwood cabinetry. This kind of quality tends to attract a value conscious quality centric customer. What's most interesting is that when I quote a price to build a better quality tank with better and thicker materials it always costs less than the big guys with thier own TV shows.
