Hello I have been bit by the ray bug very bad. I am currently looking to get a custom tank built and would like your opinions on the dimensions and what I could keep in these tanks. I am looking at two options. Please note I can't go bigger as these tanks are going into the basement and I have an "L" shaped staircase that makes bringing tanks down a pain and lack of space is a factor as well. Buying a bigger house is not an option at this time:(.
Option# 1 60" x 32" x 24" 200gallon Option#2 60" x 24" x 24" 150 gallon. Yes, I know some of you will say just go an extra 4" on the width to make it 36" but as I said space in the basement is an issue. I really believe that when keeping rays the footprint can be more important than water capacity. What is the maximum amount of rays you would put in the 200 gallon? I'd be looking at possible 3. I'd be thinking motoros and leopoldi /henlei. Looking forward to your thoughts.

Wouldn't really recommend motoros, henlei, or leopoldi in a 200G for life. Females will get over 2ft an even option #1 won't be enough space. I can make 2 suggestions, first have you considered just building a tank or pond in your basement? Would not be able to get it out without taking it apart, but it would get you around the issue of the L shaped staircase. I have links to a couple I have built in my signature. If that wouldn't really help because of space limitations in the basement then consider hystrix or retics, 2 or 3 of them would do fine in a 32" wide 200G tank.

If u cant move the tank after its built cuz ur staircase L's then maybe build it in the basement!!! And when u move take it apart, if u even do.

good advice from above.
footprint AND water volume are important with rays.
the more water volume you have, the more water you have to dilute their bioload, lowering the chances of it poisoning them before your scheduled water change.
these creatures produce a LOT of waste.

i couldn't fit a large tank in my basement either, low hanging ceiling in the stairwell, so i built it right in the basement.
when the time comes to move, i'll just take it apart.

Wht about a 4'x4'x2' tank? Or any other wide possibilities like this? Would still be kinda small for life but its possible with great filtration
