Seems how anything bigger than a standard 4'er is custom made to order, I'm thinking about some not-so-standard tank sizes.
I currently have a 4'x20x20" tank, with a big fire eel, ornate bichir, a dat and a few other catfish etc, and I've got three 3" ornates growing up in a seperate tank. I'm also thinking about getting a clown knife, and if ever they become available again I'd love another black arowana. Most of the fish I'm interested are quite long, so I'm thinking of going for something like a 4'x3'x2' tank rather than a standard 6'x2'x2', which is around the same volume. The volume and the footprint are the same, but will the extra width make up for the shorter length? [god that sounds dodgy!!] My eel is already pushing 18", the ornates can get to around 2', and if I get a clown knife or black aro they can get even bigger. I know the CK and aro will eventually need something bigger than either of those tanks, my old black aro took 2 years to get to 2' in my old 5'x2'x2', which is why I like the idea of a wider tank.

Your thoughts??

well i would do a tank like 6' or 8' long and only 24"-36" deep sounds fine (front to back). If your wanting those fish, i would spend the money on a monster setup, as long as you dont need to move anytime soon. 600 gallons sounds to be the minimum for the black aro, but im not really sure. the black knife is only supposed to reach 18" max according to drsfostersmith. that doesnt seem right but im no biologist!

We're still renting now (and not looking to buy soon with prices/interest rates the way they are) so as much as I'd like to, a 600g tank isn't really an option! I'm looking at a clown knife, not a black knife, which can get to 36", but rarely gets over 2' in captivity from what I've read. I understand if I get the CK or black aro that a 4'x3'x2' tank won't be enough to perminantly house them, and an upgrade would be planned somewhere along the line. What I'm asking is if a 4'x3' footprint would be better than a 6'x2'.

Standard tank sizes seem to vary around the world. I’ve been thinking about the dimensions of a final tank for my Asian arowana. Decided (for the moment :) ) on 5x 2.5 which has a slightly larger area than either the 4x3 or 6x2 but isn’t as dominating of the room as either IMHO.

im getting a custom tank its only2.5 foot long.

a 240 Wide is 60L x 36W x 25T wich would prolly be ur best bet.

Thats a bit bigger than I was planning on going [at this stage ;)], maybe a 5'x20"x30" is the way to go. Is 20" deep enough for those fish, or should I go for 24" [yeah yeah I know bigger is always better!!!]

Could also do the 300G Wide as well....

96 x 30 x 25 Tall

so ive heard.

ya it'll be big enough. the eel shouldnt have any probs with it and i dont think any of thos fish will get 20".? just hold out on the knife and arrow.

Too long for our current house, the whole point of my post is that we don't have 'standard sizes' like a 300g wide as any big tank is custom made. I could get is made to 54x22x33.5 if I wanted. I was looking for peoples thoughts on wider tanks compared to longer tanks, eg a 4'x4'x2' vs an 8'x2'x2', same volume and footprint, different shape.
