one of my male convicts has a split in the middle of its tail all the way to the base, it was this way when i got it 3 months ago. the convict is 4-5" it is eating and growing but the tail will not grow in, so it's swimming with a double tail. i've seen videos on you tube (mostly arowanas) where they cut off a damaged tail to have it grow back right. now is this something i should do to fix its tail or just leave it because it is still competing in the tank.

It will grow back eventually if treated correctly. Cutting the tail isnt correctly.

Do frequent water changes and you can add Vita Chem or use garlic on the food to boost its immune system. Mela-fix and salt can also help the regrowth of fins as well as warmer temperatures.

Be aware that a wound like this makes him more suseptable to disease and infection.

SpJc11 does it really bother the fish or does it just bother you?
It doesn't really bother me i add them as dithers

I'm hoping to be upgrading my tank soon so i'll get rid of him then but i would like to help him out i guess it is split to the base and will not heal. i was goin to leave it be and see if any one would take him as is but then i saw what some people had done. here is a pic i found from last month the tail is still the same

sorry if I came off as a bit harsh. if I was you cutting it would be the very LAST thing I would do as it is dangerous.

As i said he has had this as long as i've had him over 3 months and it has not healed at all. my salvini had its tail chewed to the flesh and it grew back in 6 weeks it almost a full tail. when it swims the tail moves different ways so i'm not sure if it will heal or just stay split. my only concern was it leading to something more serious.

it doesn't look or sound like much of a problem . . . it might just be a very minor deformity, not something to worry about or "fix" with drastic surgery . . .

I say no, BUT people do cosmetic cuts on their aros all the time. They however know exactly what their doing.
