I haven't been able to find a huge amount of info on the temperament of cutteri cichlids. I would be placing it in a peaceful SA/CA community with heros and gymnogeos, and would like a fish that would match the sort of calm but personable disposition.

I'm also curious if there is a reliable method to determine their genders.

I used to have a pair of cutteri in a planted tank with tetras and angels. I never had a problem. As for M/F, at the size i got them, it was obvious from finnage and coloration. With the fish you plan on keeping them with, I don't tink you will have any problems.

Singularly I believe they are pretty peacefull. My LPS has a few larger ones all together and they all fight...

I had a pair for a little over a year and they were every bit as aggressive as convicts. I single might be a little better, but I wouldn't risk them with geo's.

There's not way my pair would have got slong with tetras and angels. They would chase a full grown jack and oscar with no fear. If you get one, you should consider it to be very much like a convict.

I tried what I believe was an HRP in the tank (although it did loose a fair amount of its blue as it matured) and that was too aggressive for my taste. I'm hoping the cutteri will be more peaceful.
