I have a old 55 gallon plate glass, that is a little taller than my 75 gallon sump.
I want to divide it in half. With 9" wide compartments that are 48" long.
My glass pieces are about 2" oversized.
20x48. VS 18X48.
Is this doable, or will I just break it. Trying.
Thanks.
The sump is going to be an algae scrubber/ fry grow out tank.

Hello; If the glass in the tempered sort it will shatter into many small pieces if you try to cut it. (Ask me how I know this.) So wear eye protection. Ear plugs might not hurt as the noise of shattered tempered glass is loud. (again ask me how I know.)

Regular plate glass can be cut. I have cut thick plate glass before. Best I recall I scribed along the cut line with a glass cutter on both sides of the glass. Perhaps use a straight edge to keep the line true. I think I tapped along the scribed line to get the crack started.

Wear heavy gloves as well and be prepared for small glass chips to fly. Been a long time since I tried to cut thick glass so perhaps others will have better suggestions.

Good luck

S skjl47 is right you only make the mistake of trying to cut tempered glass once haha. He is spot on with the scribe and cut method but I usually only scribe one side of the glass. When I'm cutting such a small piece off I will put a towel under the glass under apply slight pressure across the scribe line while tapping the glass to help it separate.

Ya I already busted some tempered glass, with a drill.
So score it, and tap it, while Appling force.
Cutting a 2" x 48" piece from a 20" x 48" piece is possible.

I don't know how good you guys are at cutting glass but cutting 2" off of a 48" length with a score knife isn't easy. Especially if the glass is 3/8 or 1/2". A diamond blade on a tile saw would be the best
