if I were to cut the sponge in. Half to fit in more bio would that make it worse at mech filtration? I can still see it trapping the same amount of matter since really there is no gaps in between the walls. Would this be a good or bad idea. I don't want to sacrifice clear water for dirty water If I don't have to

You wont really be adding enough extra bio media to make the modifycation worthwhile.

Another thing to concider is that the AC's run a fairly open foam to keep from clogging and need the extra foam to do the job properly.

You can find a broken penguin filter on Ebay and add a bio-wheel or add on a secound AC thats dedicated to nothing but bio media....

Personally I'd pop an air driven hydro5 in the tank for MASSIVE bio filtration and be done with it....MUCH cheeper and more efficiant in the long run.

Some people complain about how they look but to me it's like seeing a leash on a dog....it shows responsability and safety.

Personally I wouldn't even bother using a HOB for bio. Like Wolf says, the sponges are fairly open, so the more sponge in there the better. I would just go with 2 sponges in there, and cut them in half anyway, easier to clean that way.
