I bought a piece of acrylic as a top for my 100 gal tank. Now I want to cut a door in it for ease of feeding and the like. How can I cut it? Can I use my hand jig saw? Or do you cut it like regular glass. It feels like hard plastic to me.

Rotozip works the best, but be sure to use a straight edge.

You can use a jigsaw, but you need to do something to cool it or it will melt.

A rotary cutting device of some sort would work better.

If it's thin, you can score it with a utility knife and break it.

I have a rotozip. I'll have to get a blade. Is there a specific blade that works better than others.

I used a jig saw and had a squirt bottle next to me to cool it off. I never thought of the roto zip i have one of those too i'll try next time.

I just used the normal bits that came with it.

Broke my bit a long time ago. I'll hit Lowes or the Depot on my days off. I'm also going to need some hinges and possible a slide bar.

I use a tablesaw or a radial saw.I know a lot of guys that cut acrylic or countertop material will glue a piece of terrycloth or towel to the foot of thier jigsaw to avoid scratching it,

I just left the plastic on it when i was cutting and everything came out fine.

If you use a table saw, make sure you wear safety glasses!
I got a chunk stuck right beside my eye once doing that.
