I just scored some free pieces of glass,2 @ 2'x4'.Came from a display case in a store.

I was going to use them to make tops for my tank, but my tank is only 7' long.
They will need to be cut,but I dont know if the glass is tempered or not(im thinking it is).

If I try to cut it my standard way

& if it is tempered, how hurt am I gonna get :D

Is there a way to tell tempered from plate buy the sound it makes if you tap it?

Or should I just mark it out & have it cut by a glass shop(I hate paying for something I can do myself)?

But stitches are a drag also.

TIA

i really don't think you would get that hurt if it was tempered, cuz it should just shatter into alot of tiny cubes ionstead of shards

Tyr to cut the smallest piec that is disposable.. I cut my palm open .. You wont know by doing this til it pops!! Ande trust me it'll be a mess!! There is another way I read about on my local forum.. Let me get back to you.. DO NOT CUT THE PIECES YOU INTEND TO USE!! Wait til you know.. usually Displays are tempered..

Or if you have a small piece go slap it against the ground if it breaks like large piece or pieces.. Not tempered.. If it pops into many pieces tempered

Explode is the term i would use from my first experience and hopefully my last lol:D

And I got cut :D

take it to a glass shop they can cut it for you. Glass can be a pain, sometimes it cuts perfectley ans the next it explodes if you look at it wrong.

Wear eye protection.A cube of glass bounced off my eyeglasses when a tank exploded

I have done stained glass windows, cut glass for window replacements. I was never afraid with working with glass. After filling my pants this last time, I will consult a glass guy in teaching me a trick in determining if it is tempered before I try. Maybe even go into a glass place, the sales person could guide you. I know that I am going to before the next project.
