Upgraded my filtration from Canisters to a large Wet/Dry tonight. I left the Canisters up and running as well (for now).

I have the tank lightly stocked but it has the original water and fis still in it.

So the question is...

How long would you run the Canisters to let the Wet/Dry seed?

Hoping to avoid a mini-cycle.

BTW, the tank is currently in a bare bottom configuration....switching from gravel to sand as well.

my uneducated guess would be not long at all, i think a few days to a week will be more than enough as long as everything else is already established.

to be safe i would leave it on for 2 weeks, or simply put your filtration media from the canisters into the sump. unless you need the canisters for other duties i would leave them on until they need a clean, then rip em out.

I would remove 20% of the bio media from the canisters each week for 5 weeks. Starting this after the wet/dry has been running for 2 weeks. So it will take a total of 7 weeks.

This could be modified but would need to know stock, type and amount of canister filters, and how long the tank has been currently running with this stock and filters.

personally i would leave em running for a few days (don't really consider it necessary) then take all the bio media out of the canisters and throw it in the sump. gl

Perfect plan with ni risk of a mini cycle
