hey guys,

Just wanted to ask for your advice. I have a 37gallon tall (30x12x20) and i really want to get the thing up and running as fast as possible. Could you guys give me some pointers on how to go about making this process quick and painless? a few things that i was thinking about were to use a lot of ecocomplete substrate (for the, all ready contained, heterotrophic bacteria), obtaining some used biological filter media from my other tank and putting it into my eheim 2227 wet dry filter, dosing some "cycle", and using purified water to fill the tank. if i do all that, do you think my water will be ready for fish by the end of next week? the only reason i ask is that i have a 150 gallon right now but i have some caribes coming and i dont think caribes and discus get along very well =(. so i pulled out a 37 gallon and want to set it up as soon as my stand comes in. your feedback is very much appreciated! thanks!

best,

Sun

Did you bring in media from another canister? If you put wet/dry or trickle filter media into a canister, it will not work as they grow different cultures of bacteria from the canister one.

Look up "fishless cycle". That plus filter media from another tank should get you going pretty quick.

if you have an established fitler, you have an established tank.
I usually add as much old media as I can (into the new filter), squeeze some "sludge" from other sponges/filters, and add fish.

My savior has been sponge filters. I keep them in a lot of my tanks just incase I want to start another one.

sunkyokim, Do a water change and add the old water to the new tank along with the old filter media. The old water provides food for the media will stabilize the tank. :D
