I have 2 tanks that I am going to plumb together which is giong to in total 400 gallons (one is 180, the other 220). I know the differnt ways of cycling the aquariums, but I am not 100% sure on how I want to cycle the tanks. The 220 is going to house large preditors, the 180 is going to be a planted. Any suggestions on ways to cycle? I am not sure if I want to add ammonia directly to the tanks or if I want to add a mesh bag of market shrimps. I know i want to go with fishless, though I might consider getting 30 or so danios which would become feeders to the bigger fish. Thoughts and Ideas most apperciated!

most hardware stores carry pure ammonia for cleaning. Usually like $5 a gallon (way more than you would use). Just make sure it's only ammonia with no sudsing chemicals added. Bring it up to 5 ppm, no water changes, and repeat until you see nitrite spike. After that keep it at 2 ppm until you see your nitrates start to climb (not the first reading, but a steady reading). After that, do a water change to get it safe for fish and you're good to go.

Ya I thought about that, the thing is that I am not new to this at all, but at the same time... its kinda wierd that with that much water I am not quite sure how I want to approch this one.
With the 180 being a planted tank should I keep the plants out to help the cycle move along properly? Because I know they will help eat up the ammonia in the tank.
