I guess my tank is cycled lol...I 'd like to get more opinion on this.

Setup:

240 Gallon, 55 gall W/D

Date: Sept 13

Filled the tank with water, tested for leaks, all good to go...

Date: Sept 14

- Pour 50 lbs of BRAND NEW Pool filter sand and 10 dead market prawn
- Set the heater to 85 degrees

Date: Sept 16

- No ammonia yet, so I start adding 4 ml of pure ammonia per day.
- Install an Emperor 400 filter that was in the current setup (full of nasty brown water:))
- Added about 6-7 gallons of established bio balls from current setup to the new W/D

Date: Sept 17

Add another 4 ml of ammonia, tested for ammonia, showing .25ppm YAY...

Date: Sept 18

- Add another 4 ml of ammonia, tested for ammonia, showing .25ppm again.,.
- Added about 10 lbs of pool filter sand from the current tank..

Date: Sept 19

- Tested for ammonia, got a big whopping ZERO, Test for Nitrite, got .25ppm..
- Still adding ammonia, but only 2 ml versus 4 ml

Date: Sept 20

- Added 2ml of ammonia, tested for ammonia, ZERO
- Tested for Nitrite, got .25ppm again

Date Sept 21

- Tested for Nitrite, got a ZERO
- Tested for Nitrate, got 10 ppm WTF, already ?

Date Sept 22

- Dumped about 100 ml of Seachem Stability and 20 Rosy Reds...

Date Sept 23

- A few of rosy reds die off, stuck in power head, overflow screen and etc
- Ammonia ZERO, Nitrite ZERO, Nitrate 20 PPM
- Bought 2 Firemouth, stick them in the tank..
- Dumped another 100 ml of Seachem Stability

Date Sept 24

- Ammonia ZERO, Nitrite ZERO, Nitrate 20 PPM
- Few more Rosy reds die off..same cause
- Firemouth are still okay..
- Dumped 50 ml of Seachem Stability

Tonight,
- Ammonia ZERO, Nitrite ZERO, Nitrate 20 PPM
- I got 5 healthy rosy reds...swimming around and etc..
- I did 20% WC and was going to add one of my blood parrot in there..
- Added new water, put 50 ml of seachem stability, move another 25 lbs of pool filter sand from the current tank. Check for PH, 6.7, just like the current tank ( I have pinpoint PH monitor)
- While acclimating the blood parrot, 3 more rosy reds die off, I noticed they were all swimming on the surface gasping for air. Firemouths are fine.

At this point, I got really scared...So I put the blood parrot back in the current tank and added enough dose of Seachem Prime. I used tap water with 10, 100 micron and carbon filtration. I am very sure that all chlorine were all removed..

Question, I know my tank is no where near maturity, BUT is the death of rosy reds a pure coincidence ? Or by changin water, I may have affected the readyness of the tank ?

I guess I'll find out in the morning see i the 2 rosy reds and the firemouths are okay..

Maybe I am doing something right to where everything cycled fairly quickly, or maybe a sheer luck and one liitle change (water change) threw the whole chemstry off ...

PS: Sorry for the long blog style post :) I wanna be as specific as I can..

Most of what your seeing is the result of having an already established pair of bio-wheels on your tank from the E400. The rotting shrimp is worthless by the way for establishing an aquarium.

The test results you see are the existing BB in the E400 converting the ammonia you put in the tank. Don't confuse this with the tank bieng stable or fully cycled...

You got a great head start..but add fish slowly and allow a couple of days in between for the BB bed to catch up...I can gaurantee you that if you removed the E400 and intruduced ammonia that your tank would crash. It's doing all the work and leaving nothing to establish your bio in the sump.

It's not all bad news...it's just too soon to call your tank cycled just because of the readings...

Im no expert in cycling a tank but it sounds like you attempted to clone your established tank by using media from your old tank in your new tank. I would think that your amonia spike would be higher than 25ppm if you hadnt. Cycled in a week though I dont know about that.

So the question is,

Should I keep adding pure ammonia ? or will the 2 firemouths and 2 rosy reds will be enough to provide food for the BB to survive ? I can't think on why the later will actually work. There's not enough food (waste) from the 4 little fish to support the BB that came from my old tank with humongous bio load

Should I keep adding Seachem Stability then while adding more ammonia ?

No more ammonia...just stick with the fish you have and then slowly increase the bio-load. Theres no need to use the Seachem. The BB will either grow to match or die off to the level of the bio-load in the aquarium. just take it slowly. My guess is that it's going to take a LONG time to establish that sump with a seasoned E400 on the tank but thats OK thats just overhead for when you increase stocking levels...as long as your test results stay clear don't worry about it. it'll get there eventially.
