I was wondering if you could cycle an aquarium with the shrimp that you get from a petstore such as ghost shrimp. Can they be dead or alive?I was planning on cycling this weekend and I was just thinking about this.

i don't think you want something dead decomposing in your tank as a way of cycling your tank; it will release ammonia for sure, but also toxic compounds as result from decomposing. Live ghost shrimps are kind of fragile, and probably wouldn't last long in there. Try bacteria culture, or ask the fish store for a handful of gravel from one of their tanks; just be sure no fish looked sick in the tank.
There's also feeder guppies that's actually pretty tough, and two should do it for a 10g.
Hope it helps, and Good Luck

setup your tank, and if you have an old tank use one of the dirty filters in the filter for it and should work in a few days... I did it with my 150 for my mbuna tank... let it sit a few days to evaporate the chem in the water then ran a filter from another tank and shuck the dirty filters in the tank... then three days later added 30 various size mbuna no problem... did a 55 the same with old gravel in two days...no problems...
