Hi,

I am going to set up a new 75 gallon tank in about a week and had a quick question about cycling. I am going to be switching to sand substrate in the 75. I have a cycled 10g tank, gravel sub, with a 2 inch JD and with Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate readings 0.
I've read online that transferring the old media can instant cycle the tank so was wondering if I can just get all the gravel into 2 socks and suspend them in the tank and rinse the filter contents and bio fiber, of the old tank, in the new tank along with adding Tetra safe or safe zyme and get the JD transferred to the 75g. I will be having only the 2 inch JD in the 75g for a while and dont plan to add any other fish. Will this work or will all the contents in the 10g not be enough to jumpstart cycling of a tank as big as 75g.

Any help is much appreciated!

Its not going to cycle ur tank instanly! But w/ enough seeded surface area is should only take a day or 2.

Is there anyway u can just put ur filter from the 10 on the 75 temporaly? That will ensure adequate BB! As for the substrate a media bag will work but remember ur BB needs food to live, so throw in a 8-12 rosys or even some fish food! Also having a good test kit handy will ensure proper cycling!

Dont use ur old water, pretty pointless imo and ive never heard anything good about tetra safe start, ive never used any product that promotes cycling and i did mine in 2 days with the same method on my 90! But if you insist go with api stress zyme, its availible at 99% of lfs, definatly have some bubbles going to help with gas/air exchage!

Goodluck! Feel free to ask if u have any more questions!

F1 VET - Thank you so much. Just what I needed to know. I can run the 10g filter on the 75 for a few days and will throw in some fish food too. Have the tester kits ready. API stress zyme has pretty cool reviews so will be getting that too. Hopefully mine gets cycled in the sme time yours did :)

That's what I was getting at just run your current filter on the tank with your new filter for the next month and you shouldn't see any problems.
