Finally got my new 350g up and running, and now I've got to start the cycling process. I plan to add some filter media and gravel from my 110g, so I'm hoping the cylce will be only a week.

Here's my question: Should I take about a few fish from my 110 and put them in the 350 for cycling or should I do the fishless cycle? I'm leaning toward cycling with fish because my guess is that the old gravel plus media will be sufficient "seeding" to handle a few fish, and then I can add more fish over the next few weeks. What do 'ya think? Thx

i would put the old media and some gravel from the old tank and let it stay for a week. after the first week start with two or one fish only and feed it. after three to four days i would add one more. since you have your old media and some old gravel cycling should not be too long. however, do not put too many fish at a time, it might give you a spike and the cycling won't be able to catch up with the turn around on beneficial bacteria.:) and what i learned with my 180.. i did not change water for 1 month. i started putting some goldfish (5-6 inch) every other day to start things up. good luck!

Thanks guys.

RKC, won't the beneficial bacteria from my old media and old gravel starve if I don't put in a few fish immediatley? They won't have any ammonia to eat? Am I confused? thx

agreed with del...

Your right no fish waste and the bacteria die.You can even put the fish in an hour or so before the seeded filter material.Id do a 50% waterchange on the 110 and put the water in the 350 then add the fish and bacteria get it all going at once

I agree...kinda. bacteria will die without food, so put water from 110g into 350g. You can use amonia to feed it if you want to do it fishless.

Is there a reason (good one) to get the fish in the 350 so quickly?

If it's just because you want to see them in there it doesn't qualify as good.

Go tell the wife or mom that you need a bigger tank...that should start at least a week long argument and then maybe the 350g will be cycled. (just giving you something to occupy yourself with so you'll LEAVE THE TANK ALONE. ;-)

Patience...(man, it's easy to say that)
