Cycling with fish should not be a suicide mission...or you can cycle with ammonia if you can wait.

how long does ammonia take? I also can get a filter cartridge from a pretty dirty tank

Pick up a bottle of Seachem stability and place few dither fish in your 40g. Follow the instructions and your tank should be cycled in a week. U can also speed up the cycling process using media from a established filter. I only used Seachem stability to cycle my 90g and started with 3 fish in it and it took a week to cycle.

I've always bought some cheaper fish I didn't plan on trashing and added a bottle of bacteria.
A lot of people have fishless cycled, but there is no need to kill a fish to cycle. I think that means something is wrong. The set-up and filtration forum has a plethora of information on this. Check out the stickies and you'll get answers faster than we can respond.

I rig up an 802 powerhead along with a bottle water with carbon n sponge, cut bottom bottle up, add prime 95 and let it circulate for 3 hours with heater on. Works for me

No problem. Other then using established media, Seachem Stability chemical is one of the quickest and easiest ways to cycle a tank from scratch.
