3 days ago I put a bunch of scrubbies in a 5 gal bucket, filled with water and dropped an airstone in the bottom. Added some pure ammonia and today I have nitrites! So now when I get my tank repaired in a few days my bio media will be up and running. May not be a massive culture, but certainly a jump start over starting from zero.

That should work. Somehow I doubt the nitrites is from the nitrifying bacteria.
They don't just establish themselves overnight. Unless those are used scubbies, thats a different story.

Yes they were used. But the bacteria are everywhere in the enviro, otherwise the concept would never work anywhere.
