I just purchased a brand new 55 g (48/13/26) for 116.00 (couldnt pass up the deal). I have a AC-70 HOB. Right now it's in the cycling process. Here are my procedures, please let me know if im doing anything wrong, or anything extra i could do to speed up the process without using a bacterial additive.
-"Feeding" the tank once a day with flakes
- 25% water changes weekly

Please add some procedures to my list to speed things up a bit, i dont wanna be waiting 2 months, my fish is gonna outgrow my 10 gal by then:nilly:

Might want to try and find pure ammonia without surfactants instead of using flake foods. Also, are you testing with an API master test kit? (no strips)

Adding flakes doesnt really do anything unless you have some fish. You need ammonia for the tank to start cycling unless you introduce live bacteria. Start with just a fish or two and then you can add more after it has cycled anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

The fish flakes will break down and start producing ammonia. I cycled my 20 gallon this way. I even threw in a frozen bloodworm cube. Anything that will decay will produce ammonia, so just wait really.

thanks for the help everyone... i think the pure ammonia idea would work the fastest, considering i wouldnt have to wait for the flake food (or any food) to decompose
