My tank finished cycling a little more than 2 weeks ago. Tank is 55 gallon planted tank. I had 3 days of consistant readings ammonia 0 nitrites 0 and nitrates 5 (API Master Kit). I added a pair of Angelfish. I realized this would probably be more than my bacterial colony would be prepared to handle. I fish-in cycled with 2 large Zebra Danios (they did just fine). I have eco-complete substrate and used supplemental bacteria and my ammonia and nitrites both spiked and came down very quickly. The Angelfish are adults, maybe 4 inch each. I kept a close eye and everything stayed steady (yay!). Well, the Angelfish started really fighting after spawning, and the male got a spot on his lip from it-nothing to bad, but I was afraid with the new tank it would get an infection. I added 5 flame tetras 5 days after the Angels (last Friday). Sooner than I wanted, but I figured a mini-cycle was better than the fighting. The tetras worked, no more fighting, but I did get a very small reading of ammonia the next day. I did a 25% waterchange, and it's been gone since. Here's the puzzling part- I have since had nitrites reading 0.25ppm (the lowest reading next to zero) and water changes do not lower them. I test immediately after a water change and it's the same. I have been doing WC's every-other day. Soo..

Is it giving that reading constantly because maybe they are pretty close to zero? I still have Nitrates.

Should I continue to do every-other day water changes, back off, or step them up?

Do I need to wait until I get a total 0 reading to add more flame tetras (these guys are pretty small)? I would like to have a couple more since they are schooling fish (final stocklist will be 2 angels, 15 flames, 5 bolivian rams, and a pleco of some sort).

Is there anything I can do to lower the Nitrites, besides WC?

Do my plant ferts make them worse, if so should I back off?

And finally- how much damage will the .25ppm do to fish potentially? All of the fish are acting find and displaying really excellent colors and behaviors.

Sounds like your tap water may have some nitrite content. Have you checked it? If it is a mini-cycle, just dose with Prime & leave the tank alone for a few days. The more you mess with it, the longer it will take for the BB to settle down & get back to work. A 0.25 Nitrite content isnt too bad, but be ready for WC's to make sure it doesn't get any higher than that.

Thanks...I dont think its tap because its read zero many times before. I tested tonight and it was at .5 ppm. I did a 30% change & it went down to a faint .25 . Ive stopped vacuuming the gravel & have cut back feeding.

Sounds normal with a really low bio load fishy cycle.

The nitrite to nitrate bacteria allways takes around twice as long to fully colonate a tank.

Just keep a eye on it. And if the nitrite gets to over .5 then do a water change.

You could add a couple of fish if you want. Just more fish means more water changes right now.

Just keep the nitrite below .5ppm & add a single dose of Prime each day to keep them from getting stressed out... Definitely quit cleaning! You have to have a small amount of waste in there to keep a consistent food source for the BB.
What kind of bacteria supplement did you use & are you still dosing?
I've also had good luck pushing through the nitrite stage by keeping the light on for a good 24 hours. Just my experience on that one.

I'm using Nitromax every other day. I keep the lights on from 6 a.m until around 10 p.m. I am leery to keep them on any longer because the Angels seem to appreciate their rest when the lights are off.

I knew better than to vacuum the gravel- I havent' touched one side of the tank, but it is just irrisistable to suck up pieces of poo when the siphon is already in there! After the WC, the fish acted the same but my Angels colored up much more so I guess they are appreciating the nitrite removal.

Nitrites faint .25 today so I left it alone. The angels must be feeling halfway decent, lol, they just spawned for the second time in a week.
