I'm no expert by any means, but I didn't want to look like a total amateur by asking a cycling question, but here it goes (-:

I've been trying to cycle a 30 gallon for about 6 weeks now, and having no luck getting nitrites to go down. Right now there are three hardy climbing perch in there . . . since they breath a lot of air they can survive in the crappiest water so I decided to go and use them to help cycle the tank. The nitrite has been steady at about 3, and the nitrate at about 10ppm. But it's been that way for a couple weeks now and I can't seem to get it to change. I even used a ton of that cycling stuff full of bacteria that everyone and their brother says doesn't work but I tried it anyway. Filter is a Whisper 30 back of the box, not ideal equipment I know, but it came with the tank and I figure it should be enough. Anyone have any suggestions?

stop peeing in the tank and it should drop back down lol. naw man, next time im over ill bring my test kit and we try and see whats up

I would say that you have a lack of space for beneficial bacteria. That Whisper 30 doesn't really have any form of biological filtration. It's primarily mechanical, with a little charcoal for chemical. Try adding a sponge filter with an air pump.

ya thats is true, good point hawkfish i over looked that, i might have a extra filter with a bio wheel, im sure that will help alot, it needs a new part, but when u come over tomar, we will look at it and i have a cpl bio wheels alrdy rdy for use( there sittingin my wetdry so rdy to start worken) that u can use so u can get a quick fix

you need a different filter with a bigger bio mass...for a tank that size i would get a bio-wheel hang on the back filter.....i like the emperor 280 or 400...
