I have an empty 29gallon and i want to set this up for angels i am going to order! I have a sponge filter graded for an 80gal tank and it has been seeded(placed in a mature tank for 3-4 weeks) If i just add this sponge filter will it keep it from having ammonia spikes and nitrite spikes? THe bio-load would be with the new arrivals 5 small angels thats it in a 29gal with a sponge filter rated for an 80gal!

I think you'll be okay. But, personally, I want to have that filter seeded for at least 6 weeks before using it on another tank. Is the seeding tank a heavily stocked tank? Since you are getting small angels, it should work out fine...just keep a close eye on water parameters.

i've seeded for as little as a week and never gotten bad results. What is the 80g stocked with though> It's not likely, but if u have more bioload in the 29g than the 80g, you might have a spike

it was seeded in the 55 for 4-5weeks and then put into a 10gallon shrimp grow out for two weeks! yea it was a heavily stocked 55gal! and there is no way the bioload in this 29 will be more than the 55!

the filter is rated for a 80 it was seeded in a 55!

It may have been seeded in the 55, but if you used it for over a day in the shrimp growout tank, you only have the bio load to handle the 10. I would but it back in the 55 for a day or two first.

yea i was thinking bout doing that because there is next to zero of a bioload in a 10gallon with 10 crystal red shrimp in it! so the seeded sponge will be reseeded in the 55 for another week or two!

Howdy,

I am not sure if you mean you simply tossed it in the tank or if you actually had it hooked up. It'd be much better if it had water flow thru the sponge. Anyways, a seeded sponge is a great starter, I used that method for my 75 gal during a move and am currently using it on my 220.
