i was talking to a friend about cycling my 400l sw tank and he suggested putting some damsels in it to help out cycling, and although ive thought of this before i wasnt going to do it as they get aggressive and will also become food for alot of the other fish i want, so is it wrong to put them in when i know they will become feeder fish pretty much as soon as the tank is done cycling?

Live Rock will cycle the tank inside 24 hours, dont cycle it with damsels its cruel.

its really up to you if you have a moral delema with providing damsels as a food sourse for your bigger fish.. i cycled with damsels and i hated them becuase i was trying to set up a peaceful tank and they where just bullies but seeing one get eaten by a larger fish would make me happy... and plus it would be a "natural" food sorse for your larger fish

I normally cycle my SW tanks with live sand and live rocks... Its not cruel to use damsels to cycle a tank, I do it all the time.. They are 5 dollar fish and be kept afterwards.

Its not cruel?? where did you read that?? please do provide a source for this on the net...

In reality, it is cruel because the ammonia burns the gills...how you like your ears burnt??? and if someone did that to you, would you not deem it as cruel??? Believe me, if you cut open a dead fish which has suffered ammonia poisoning, you'll know that its cruel.

I always use cocktail shrimp in a nylon, or liquid ammonia. I find its the best way to get a solid cycle done on the tank. This way when Live stock is added, there is minimal to no ammonia increase with the additions. On my 120 i used liquid ammonia to feed my already established bacteria and it worked very well.
