Cycling with Seachem Stability

A friend of mine got this stuff for his new tank (a 45 gallon long). Are you supposed to use a filter cartridge while using this? Cause my friend isn't (He was afraid the cartridge would pull it out of the water) and He is on his 3rd day now and there is this brownish slime on his tank's walls. He has bio wheels in his filters but no cartridges and there is no decor in the tank either. The substrate is play sand. Do you think the slime is the BB because it cannot anchor itself to anything? Its the only thing i could think of.

P.S. - I dont know if this is relevant, but he added stress zyme to his tank as well, I believe on the first day. And he has 6 goldfish in it right now, for the purpose of cycling.

i dont see why a filter cartridge would pull it out of the water, unless the cartridge was filled with carbon.

the slime on the tanks walls sounds like algae...

any other questions?

Algae could not have built up over a 3 day period with no sun. And yes the cartridge does have carbon in it. Thanks anyway.

Has anyone seen a cartridge that doesnt have carbon in it? Cause i haven't...

all algae needs to grow is any source of light and nutrients. it doesn't necessarily need sun light to flourish.

But i dont think it could have bulit up that fast with almost 0 light.. And this stuff is everywhere... Real spider-webby like. Not like algae.

ohhhh its possible... don't u worry. given excessive amounts of nutrients .. its possible

anyways, its your friend's tank, u may not know it but he may put the lights on more then u know or even have a tank light.

i have had that so called, ''spider webby'' algae before.

besides, beneficial bacteria wouldn't cultivate that quickly and in that way. u would find it mostly in and on porous surfaces such as bio media, substrate, etc etc.

Yeah but he added both of those products which are supposed to help cycle your tank faster, and he has no tank light. In the past i accidentally used a bacteria supplement in one of my 10 gallons in excess and it put similar slime all over the inside. Maybe using the Seachem product AND the Stress zyme was too much and its having a simliar effect. Ill try to get a pic of it tomorrow. No light to take the pic with tonight.

Ive been using those products for a while myself. Ive never had spider webs from using the products. the spider webs are caused by a build up of micro-organisms or nutrients. beneficial bacteria is not spider webs stuck to ur glass..

u don't need to have lots of light to get certain types of algae growing.

Ok maybe spider webs was not the best term. Im not sure how to explain it, but its not like that hair algae stuff.

Its just brown slime.

ok, regardless of its shape or form, its safe to say its not beneficial bacteria. it sounds more like some form of algae.

or it could be a build of waste.... food, poo, etc etc
