cycle a tank, if I use cycled already warm decloranated water, but a new sponge filter or power filter for the tank. it's a 30 gallon(36Lx12Wx17H) plan to use it as a hospital tank,or a breeding tank. I think I got two maded pairs of discus a mandrein red pair, and a royal blue pair.

Cycling does not occur in the water column, but rather porous filter media. Using water from an established tank has little to no effect on cycling a new filter, unless there is ammonia present in the water.

thanks, I guess I was thinking of something else about water.
should I add some turbo start or clearity?

put filter media and substrate from an already established tank to help it along faster. but you have to keep a source of waste in there at all time or the tank will be useless....

thanks austin, so I'll pull some gravel out of the 135, and pull some media out of the fx5. if I do that and add some water from the 135 in to the 30 gallon it won't have to cycle right..??..what filter should I use a sponge or a power filter. I plan to use it as a hospital tank, breeding tank,or home for some of the smaller discus.

Adding water is useless. Just go with substrate and filter media as already advised. Sponge filter is always an option for smaller tanks meant as quarantine or hospital.

cool, so if I use new water with prime, age it and then put it in with the substrate and sponge filter- how long will I have to wait before I can add fish.
also how many juvie(2 inch) discus I put in the 30 gallon? also how many watts of light should I put on there she gave me 2 sets of lights but I don't know how many watts the light bulb is. oh and will it be ok to add a couple of plants, and a small piece of driftwood for them to hide. man I use to be pretty smart when it came to fish, now what I knew about fish slip my mind. I guess it's old age(lol even though i'm only 27).

No need to age your water. Add your fish when your test kit tells you your ammonia and nitrite are zero with nitrate no more than 20.

This is answered in your discus thread in discus forum.

Doesn't matter how many watts your lights are unless you seriously want to start aquatic gardening. Stick with low light plants as discus prefer subdued lighting. Anubias, Java fern and Java moss are good starters.

a guy off a local fish forum just brought me a whisper 20-30 and a sponge filter wet, will that help speed up the tank. I'm confused about how many discus one guy says 15, another says 10, and I think you said 5. I'm not putting live plants in it. the bulb is a 20 watt is that ok, or is that to much?
