what substance is the best to add to a new tank to get the nitrogen cycling? also how long does said substance take to create the habitable environment for my fishies?

ive used cycle before but nothing else. ive only set up one tank new, all others were ready o go.
Well I'm pretty sure thats what your talking about. 99% of the time the bacteria in the bottle won't work. The reason for this is by the time you get it all the bacteria in the bottle is dead so your just wasting your money. Read the links in this link

Find a friend with an established tank and steal a mulm saturated filter pad. Rinse it out in your new tank. It'll be fully cycled in under a week.
Using matured media from an established tank is by far the best and the fastest way.
If this is not an option, look into a fisless or fish-in cycle.
