hey guys i have a 10 gal aquarium, i just got a 30 gal today for xmas if i use the new filter on my established tank to get a colony of bb into the filter would i be able to skip the cycling process or do i still have to go through it?

You sure would. I'd run them together at the same time.

A better idea (as filters only hold as much BB as needed which would mean that not

much would grow on the new filter since you probably already have enough on your

older filter) is to run the new filter on the new tank and squeeze the dirty cartridge

from the old tank into your new filter. This would kick-start it. I'd do it about once a

day for a week. Maybe even add some established gravel or decorations from the old

tank. Make sure you test your water as you go along. Should be cycled in about a

week or less with these tips.

Good Luck! Merry Christmas! :)

Firstly, welcome to MFK

Secondly, I agree with ghost method. But im a lazy guy so i would just hook up both the old and new filter onto the 30 gallon, transfer all the gravel from your 10 gal to the 30gal as well as the fish.

Do note that the current amount of BB in the tank is only sufficient to cope with that of your current fishes in the 10gal. Slowly add more fish into the tank for the BB to colonise your new filter. After about 3 weeks (1 month if you want to be safe), the new filter should be seeded and you can remove your old filter and place it back in the 10 gal should you decide to keep the 10gal running. Otherwise, keep both filters in the 30gal, the more filtration the better.

Lastly, Merry Xmas! (dang i wished my parent buys me a tank for xmas too)
