I set up a new 20g tank with a penguin 150. I added a used filter media with the new cart that came with it. I also added two 1inch convicts. I tested the water and it has very little amm and nitrite. It also has nitrates because the used filter. How long till its cycled and i can pull the old filter out and just leave the new one?? I was thinking a week put im not sure. I just been doing 5g changes every other day so the fish aren't in danger. Should i just leave the old filter in until no amm and nitrite? I just don't want to pull it out to soon and have the tank messed up. any advice app ty.

I would leave the old filter in, especially now that you have fish in a tank that's cycling.. You will want the old filter that has established BB to do work on the ammonia that will be produced from the fish. If you take the filter off your ammonia levels may harm the fish. Most people on here will tell you it's best to do fishless cycling. Check out this link for info: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224559 I hope everything goes well, Next time I would try doing a fishless cycle though..

I did this with my dads pirahnas tank and it worked fine with no amm but he had a whole new filter with a whole old filter not just the cartiridge

ya but isn't it more like a mini cycle because i added good bact with the the old filter? It should almost be fully cycled if your adding good bact. I would never add fish to a tank if i thought they would be in harm but i thought this would work.
