Have a friend who isnt taking care of his fish like he wants to, so I'm thinking of acquiring a group of Cyphotilapia Frontosa that he has. My question, how would they fair in an unheated tank? Temps routinely run 74-76 degrees. Would this be alright for these guys?

That is a bit too cold for this species. 79-81 is what is required. Go get a heater they aren't very expensive and will give your fish a much better home. How big is the tank you plan to keep him in?

They are a deep-water species so water on the cooler side should be fine. I keep mine in a unheated tank fine. My water ranges from 76-78 in the winter and 78-80 in the summer. I have kept fry in unheated tanks just fine as well and those range a bit lower then the temps in the large tank. Surface temps on the lake can vary from low 70's to mid 80's. Recommended temps to keep these fish in range from 74-80 deg. I think you will be fine.

lol I have plenty of heaters, this is just an unheated tank that homes 'cool' water fish.

I agree, as we speak I have the Frontosa's in an unheated quarantine tank and they seem very active and happy. Anyone else with experience keeping Front's in cool water?
