I just realized the challenges a species must face in the wild would also include dietary pickiness. As I watch my angelfish gingerly mouth one particle of food while the fish around him inhale massive quantities without thinking at all about it, I think, "Really, angel. How do your kind survive?".

Are they better at rejecting inappropriate foods?

Is their environment so laden with their favorite delicacies that they have become, as a species, spoiled?

Has it paid well to avoid lingering at the surface?

How do these balance out with daily caloric needs?

hopefully someone chimes in here

*CHIME* :D

I don't really know, but I would guess it's because they have such a big selection in their natural habitat.

my angel was the least picky of all my fish and always hungry and begging for more.
tried on several occasions to even eat my finger
