Hello everyone, I purchased a small motoro stingray at a LFS. At the LFS he wasn't moving and I know that healthy rays are always looking for food. However, it was the last one in the tank and I got a good deal (too good to be true :( When putting it in the tank at home it seemed to be O.K. The next day I noticed that it appeared that it had a small chunk gone (like a bite of a cookie). Please note the ray is in the tank by itself. Even though I don't have a heater guard I don't think it got burned. I have two questions.
1) How long will it take the damaged flesh to grow back and will something like Melafix help to speed up the process?

2) For those who have used PVC pipes for heater guards. How many holes would you have to drill in the PVC pipe to allow for water flow.

For those stingray keeper gurus, please advise.

Best thing you can do is keep the water clean the stress down and keep whatever food it will eat for you coming.

I have never made a heater guard but I would think the more holes the better. Until then if you put the heater straight up and down instead of sideways it should limit the chances of the ray resting against it.

I would use a little salt turn up the temperature and keep up the good water changes...

post some pics of the ray...and i drilled 4 rows evenly around my pvc so yeah drill as many as you can mine works great.

DO healthy rays constantly search for food? I have w small Motoro and it searches for food when the light go off. It dosent constantly seach...it burrys itself in the sand most of the time.

They do prefer darker settings but yes id say a healthy ray is always looking for food.

you also just got this ray, didn't you? sometimes they can take a while to get used to the new tank, so will bury themselves till they feel safe. mine never bury themselves anymore, even during water changes. (the only time they would bury themselves is if i added water that is too cold, the sand helps them keep their temperature from dropping too low)

U said that the ray is the only fish I'n the tank? Did u have fish I'n the tank before? Did u cycle the tank? Sorry just wanna make sure u cycled the tank before putting the ray in

Thanks for all the advice. I will keep everyone posted about the results. Just to answer a few questions asked. Yes, the tank is cycled (I'm an experienced hobbyist). The ray is now very active. Especially with the lights out. I just hope the flesh grows back. If I can I'll take a picture. Thanks everyone!
