Damage to powerhead?

So last time I tried this my powerhead started shocking me and I had to buy a new one. I want to connect a hose to it to empty my tank faster for water changes was last time just a coincidence or was just because that's not whr it's made for. My powerhead now is a maxi jet 1200

TBH if I had a powerhead that was giving me shocks it would be getting chucked away. If it's just for water changes i'd buy a cheap powerhead for the job
