The house I grew up in is now empty, after my grandfather who lived there passed away december 2008. The house has been sitting smack in the middle of the woods, with 3, yes 3, yards around it, 2 of which are small meadows, home to all sorts of animals.
I recently found out that the house will most likely be turned into a police activity league center (sports for little kids are organized by PAL). This may involve tearing down the house and clearing land around it... And I have no say in the matter. The woods around the house are beautiful, with a nice creek running through them and seasonal ponds forming and drying up annually... And now im probably never going to be able to go there again............
In a word, I'm gutted. Hopefully i can get some pics in the spring/early summer to show you all how beautiful the place is........

I feel ya - it is hard to watch beautiful places you grew up in/around get torn down and ripped up in the name of "progress"...

No possibility of buying it back.....
Its going to be "renovated" by kids going to a not-so-great high school in my town.
IMO its fine.... Needs to be cleaned up, but its fine how it is. Running water, electricity work fine.
And the worst part is that either the pal center gets built or he volunteer fire dept. burns it down, "for practice."

TBH, i will probably still go on the property if and when im not supposed to.

Ouch, that sucks...
You said there's seasonal streams around it...? Maybe you can make a case for it being too important environmentally to develop the property.

It seemed strange back in 1992 to watch the house my dad grew up in go when my grandfather died (they owned it since the 1930's).

Then just a few months ago, my Mothers father's house was also sold when he passed away (also in the family since the 30's).

So, I can feel you a little.

the seasonal ponds are home to newt and frog larvae, and the stream i can only guess homes many fully grown newts and frogs. its worth a shot i guess. but the ponds and stream should be far enough into the woods to avoid being cleared... unless the organization decides to go that far into the woods.

I was sad to see my grandparents house torn down. It was sold to the neighboring company for additional material storage.

My parents house will most likely end up the same way.

thats too bad... i feel for ya.

this is hard for me because i lived in this house till i was 5, then went there every day until i was 10.... im so attached to the house and the meadows and woods....

If there are frogs and newts in it, then there's a fairly strong chance that it could be protected. Frog populations world wide are declining, so acquiring an environmental protection status is possible.

I would feel gutted too.
