somewhere
I had originally planned to turn my 130 into a reef, but I think I'd rather shoot for something different and go for an all damselfish tank.

I figure all add most of the common stuff, chromis, yellowtail, domino, humbug etc, and then maybe go for some exotics. Is anyone familiar with any interesting/rare damselfish or where to buy them?

I figure the tank will be 100% damsel, and have at least 20 or 30 of them.

The tank itself is actually a 75, with a 55g sump (which i'm working on building now).

Anyways, does anyone have any ideas on species & or where to buy them? Or is this a stupid project that's not going to work or even look good.

Peace

The chromis should school and get along fine. I'm not to sure about other species though. Damsels are cichlid like in behavior and personality. I don't know if overcrowding them (like some people do with african cichlids) would help out with aggression or not. I've kept fiji devils and 3 striped damsels in a 5' long 120 tank before. They divided the tank in half and there was some skirmishes in the middle of the tank with no casualties. I had 3 of each. The fiji devils fought among themselves and dug constantly. The 3 striped damsels got along fine with each other and spawned many times but fought with the fiji devils alot. I like the concept of your tank and hope it works out for you. It would be a very colorful and active tank.

At the store I worked at we once but about 50 damsels into a 75 to sell them out of. It actually looked pretty awesome and we sold a ton more due to that. I would avoid the three stripes though, they are just the meanest fish. A cool one that you don't see much of is the velvet damsel, or the pink and yellow damsel, or the blue and gold damsel.

you might have a battle royal with all them damsel's you'll need a fish decoration of a wrestling ring lol

the main problem i forsee (aside from the aforementioned battle royale) is that the "common" damsels are pretty much the only ones that keep their colors into adulthood

i bought two fairly unusual damsels, a black and gold and neon velvet. both are now drab grey and brown adults. the blue damsels (with ot w/o any yellow) the various chromids and a scant few other ones are really the only ones that stay cool looking (aside from the garabaldi, but i'm assuming you don't want a foot long coldwater damsel in this tank)

i've also noticed that certain damsels (Neoglyphodon, Stegastes, and certain Pomacentrus species) tend to nip at or full-out eat zoos, solitary polyps, and sometimes xenia

I'm doing the same thing with my 240g right now. The difference is I'm putting in like 1doz Green Chromis, 1 doz Atlantic Blue Chromis, and 1-2 doz Damsels in a reef. But my kicker is I'm adding my Dragon Moray & maybe a Clown Tang.

I consolidated my tanks and have 17 various damsles in with my Dragon Moray in my 75g until I finish restructuring my 240g.

But I think it can be done.
