I was watching a show on tv and it was about the amazon and fish in it. The host swimming in the water said that the stingrays were very dangerous. So does anyone know how dangerous they are? Any deaths among hobbyists?

no just some stings, it can hurt tho

I know personally, that the locals in Colombia are very afraid of them. It is the one thing they fear the most from the local rivers. I heard some pretty tall tales as a kid once upon a time.

easy to fear in the wild... just go walk through some dark murky water..they get stepped on and people get stung.. plus with out medical treatment things can go very bad....

if your careful and pay attention to the ray your risk as a hobbyist is pretty low

I have some friends who were missionaries in the Peru for 15 years and they said that the rays were feared more than the piranhas. Their son stepped on one when he was young and got a nasty sting. When they would go into the rivers to swim or whatever, they'd take a stick in with them and whack the water, that would scare the rays away usually.

For an interview once, I described being tagged like using a bent rusty needle to inject your arm with gasoline, then lighting it on fire. Should have seen the reporters face.
