Dangers of Tank Cleaning

This girl contracted a very rare strain of flesh eating bacteria from an injury while cleaning the family fish tank. She's now facing amputation due to the resistance against antibiotics and treatments.

Certainly an interesting and slightly freaky read.

yea it is rare though so not everyone will get it from cleaning a fish tank.

oh jeez dont show that to my parents they would feak out and never let me touch my tanks again lol never though you could ever get anything serious from keeping fish

This does not worry me at all. I keep very clean aquariums, whereas most average people (not saying most people on here) do not even know to do weekly water changes, or use water conditioners which is basic knowledge to experienced fish keepers. Also, 8 year old's should not be cleaning out an aquarium. I read in a different article about this same girl, saying she was just sticking her arm in the tank, and that her mother had told her many times to not do this, so when she cut her hand, she did not tell her mother because she knew she was not suppose to be messing with the tank, and did not want to get into trouble. This should really be under "Lessons Learned", because children should always be supervised around any size aquarium, and know not to stick anything in the water, including body parts. Just my thoughts.
