I went to my lfs looking for some feeders and a couple algae eaters. I discovered that they didn't have anything that my 4-5 inch gars could eat. My lovely girlfriend noticed that they were having a sale on Zebra Danios, 18 cents each. I also noticed in one tank they had a Royal and Clown Pleco, and I asked the guy for 2 clowns, he gave me one clown and royal, for the price of the clown....
I thought it was a little weird to feed my gars danios, but they seemed to like it. The danios prove to be very quick and they school, so my 3 gars started actually working together to herd the danios from one end of the tank to the other and snapping at the passerbyers.
Has anyone else ever done this? If you find them cheap I recommend it, because it also adds a pretty look to your tank, I hate when the rosie reds are in the tank for food, they just look trashy. At least the Danios look pretty as they're being devoured.

Hmm the whole hunting mentality is pretty cool, bluegill are also good feecers they put up a fight and will duck and hide to stay alive

I stuck a couple of giant danios in with my gar when I removed them from another tank. The giant danios are very fast and I didn't think the gar would get them. He was able to catch one, the other is still there after 2 weeks. I will be adding a couple more gar, so maybe I'll get to some of the hunting behavior that you describe.

Agreed. The tanks with random rosy reds swimming around just makes them look a little crappy.

I put my 2 florida gars in a tank with 4 giant danios, the next day they were all gone. lol

zebra danios are excellent choice for feeders and thats exactly my juvi gars are getting but try and ween them off live food if they're still small.

They are about 5 inches long, and pretty stuck in their ways. I wish I could get them off live food though, prolly be cheaper. But then again, theres something exciting about watching them hunt down and devour poor unsuspecting fish.....

I first started with 10 danios to cycle my tank (used media); dumped my first senegal...a week later, huge belly and two danios missing... Added a CK, and a few days later...all gone!

If I saw danios at 17 cents I would have gotten ALL of them; a buddy of mine works at Petco and the farm he orders them from charges them at 69 cents a piece.

Always make sure however, that once the fish are on sale they arent sick!

It was petland and every once in a while they do random sales like that, of course its if you've got their petclub card, but yeah I was all over it. I wish they'd do it again.
