I had a mag drive 7 for my return pump. It wasn't too loud and it did its job. I later upgrade to a Laguna max flo pump and it is much more efficient. The mag drive was 70w at 700gph. The Laguna was 78w at 2000gph and a lot less noisy.

I runnning a mag18 on my 240g, I really like its pretty good, not that noisy and pretty satisfied but more filtration is always needed.
155watts @ 1800gph ^^ laguna pumps are good to

I've had nothing but problems with mag drive pumps. Broken impellers and noisy beyond all belief. I will never use another one. I just replaced my mag12 with a maxijet 5500 made by marineland. It pushes more gph for less money and uses less energy. Also it is dead silent. Don't buy from danner manufacturing. Also, Christine that works in the warranty department is possibly the rudest and most sarcastic person ever. She put the icing on the cake that made me swear to never buy or reccommend this pump

Been using Mag Drives since the 80s, One of the 1200s has been running 24/7 since then. I have replace impellers and volutes, mostly because an object got caught, this can happen with any pump, especially if sand can get in which pits and ruins impellers and volutes.

The pumps can vibrate/hum especially if sand or junk isn't regularly cleaned out.
I use sponge filter under the pump to lessen vibration
I also run a Laguna 2600, but for only a short time so far, so I cannot vouch for its longevity. The Laguna has been quiet, and supposedly uses less power, the only downside I have found is that is not set up for PVC fittings, which I prefer to flexible hose

I consider this my own fault, when it started to make noise, I didn't clean it out.

I've had good luck with them so far. I've had teh Mag 7, Mag 9, Mag 18, and the Mag 24.

The Lagunas don't "supposedly" use less power; they do use less power. I have tested mine on a Killowatt and they are as efficient as stated on the box.

In regards to the fittings, it's true that they come with a barbed quick connect fitting, but they sell a threaded quick connect fitting so that you can plumb direct to PVC: http://www.lagunaponds.com/lagunaeng/connectors/connectors1.php?link=192
