usually i would leave the lights on 24/7...but decided to 'cool-off' the lights during the night.
this is what i found when i turn on the lights 0515hrs this morning....
You should have a "night" cycle with the lights, you shouldn't be leaving them on 24/7. Fish need down time to rest and sleep, just as we do. Also, depending on damage and how fast you acted, you might have been able to save your SD's life, rather then taking pictures and video of him.
lolz....don't worry. after about 30mins of battle, the SD was released and doing fine. both my SDs' are fighters bearing scar marks from my arowana 'love-bites' and drop scales from my pbass kisses. they've been tankmates for some time now, i guess they're just getting to know each other 'up close & personal'.
i used to keep the lights on 24hrs a day to keep them from getting my still growing pbass at 4", the thing with diurnal fish is they stop moving at dark, while bichirs start hunting with their noses.
for 3 months, and there was no ill effect or anything, bichirs actually rest in the day time.
i think you should add more SD to spread the aggression, if this happens with in consecutive days, he might not recover.
its cool sight to see if your cool with the chance of loosing it.
And yes, you shouldn't leave the lights on 24/7. Just like humans, fishs need rest too. But fish don't have eyelids so they can't close their eyes. Imagine how are they feeling being exposed to light constantly with nowhere to sleep?
And also best to just seperate them if you care for your SDs since you now clearly know that the endli have the ability to take down and do some damage on them.
thanx for all the good advice...will try to do necessary adjustments though my tank do have a dark spot where my aro would park to rest. my tank is 522 and i'm using only a 3ft lighting that's not too bright as i don't have any water plants in the tank.
perhaps can add some floating plants as a shade or dim the lights? what you all think?
