Hello MFK,

A new Yellow Lab has this dark spot on it's side. It's a bit "slower" than the others but is still active.

Can you please ID the disease and suggest cure/meds?

Thank you,
Sid

Anyone? Any recommendations?

I have currently separated this fish out and am monitoring it. I am holding off adding any medications till I get some definite advice from the experts.

Thank you,
Sid

Well, the good news is that the pectoral fin is still there.

The bad news is that on closer inspection it looks much worse than just a bruise.

It may be some parasitical infection.

Ohhh man. You said you have him in a separate tank right? If so add aquarium salt (use a little more than normal) I personally use marine salt. I add 1 tsp for every 5 gal. In this case i would use 1 and 1/2 for every 5 gal. Make 15 % water changes 2 times a week. Preferablly use a 10 gallon tank for hospital. I will keep researching to see what medication you can use.

Have not seem him eating.. He did appear to swim normally last time I checked. He is just a lot less active than the others in the same batch.

Since I have separated him out (and put him in the bucket), he is a bit scared and is laying near the bottom of the bucket.

I will get another "hospital" tank soon (I just had one extra "quarantine tank") and put in a heater for this guy.

(I have added the aquarium salt.)

Any other suggestions?

Use Melafix is very good for open wounds. Use as directed in the bottle. Remember to remove the carbon in the quarantine tank if you are going to medicate the fish. Use only a sponge to remove the waste. Watch him every day to see if symptoms get better or worse. Good luck man. Check the water parameters in the tank that he used to be to see if the amonia, nitates and nitrites are suitable. You need to find out what made that hole to your fish. It has to be either an agression or an infection due to poor water quality. Keep me updated.

Never seen that before - maybe try posting in the fish disease forum. If I had to guess I'd say skin ulcer due to poor water conditions - your tanks are too small for the fish your housing and you are grossly overstocked.

I do stupid stuff like click on your "My Tank Setups"
